Greater Danbury
Continuum of Care Awarded Funds To Address Homelessness
The Greater Danbury Continuum of Care
has been awarded $930,300 in funding by the U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD) as the result of the 2010 Continuum of Care Grant
Competition. The funds will
continue funding for four existing local programs to assist people who are
homeless or in danger of becoming homeless and to continue local administration of the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).
“We congratulate Co-Chairs Milena Sangut and Michele Conderino as well
as thank the Continuum for their hard work in preparing the successful grant
application,” said Danbury Housing Partnership Chair Mark
J. Nolan. “The
programs supported by these grants are crucial to efforts to address the
problem of homelessness in the greater Danbury region.”
The Greater Danbury Continuum of Care is a
HUD-required consortium of private, non-profit and public agencies that provide
services to people who are homeless or facing the threat of homelessness.
The Continuum of Care grants are awarded competitively to local programs to
meet the needs of people who are homeless in the community. Grants fund a variety of programs
ranging from outreach efforts to provision of permanent
supportive housing. HUD will
announce awards for new project proposals later in the year.
Danbury received grants for the following four
programs: Danbury Shelter Plus Care Combo Program; PILOTS Shelter Plus
Care; the Danbury Housing Authority/Greater Danbury Mental Health Authority
Shelter Plus Care program and the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS)
Program. The three Shelter Plus Care programs are designed to provide
housing assistance coupled with needed supportive services for residents. The HMIS Program operated by Dream
Homes Community Center gathers and manages required information on utilization
of homeless services in the region. The awards represent an increase over
the amounts awarded to the Greater Danbury Continuum of Care in the prior
year.
The Greater Danbury Continuum of Care is a
key partner in the implementation of Danbury’s Ten-Year Plan To End Homelessness. In addition to
preparation of the Continuum of Care grant application, the Continuum
also implements the yearly “Point In Time” count of people who are
homeless; plans the annual Project Homeless Connect Event and addresses other
issues involving homelessness in the greater Danbury region.
